Just got internet. Really needed for our boy. GCI has $5.99 long dis pack that include "free dial up" So hello
Well it's our 2nd winter here (Moved from Anch 10Years-Juneau 5 years And New York all but four years did college!!)
One husband and one little boy. Dogs cats and now chickens all 28 of them (day olds now two weekers) live in a 16 by 40 cabin on skids. (fri we get 50 more chickens!!!!)
I think it best not to have any of my family in New York know of a slight change in my priorities. Owning much less having to live with livestock would not go over.
I came to Ak on Vacation and loved it. Moved here 2 years later. and meet fisherman with quite a line .... so now Im happy here.
I love hearing the stories of how we just surive here in AK.. I accidentally mentioned my Joy when a neighbor brought us an outhouse. Due to my families reaction I thought it best to live with their own idea that it was just for decoration. I was really hard to have to keep it to my self when we moved up to indoor plumming.
Well now ya got an idea as to where I at. kasilof

Welcome to the forum! I know how excited you must be to have internet. It was just a few years ago that we got a laptop and internet. It was such a contrast to our lifestyle. No running water and we only had enough juice in our batteries for the laptop. I remember the first morning after getting it all hooked up. Chuck was up early clicking away sending an e-mail to his parents. When I came down the stairs, I couldn't help but laugh. It was such a site to see him working on the computer with an oil lamp beside it for enough light to see the keys. Just didn't fit. Sometimes when we start making plans to get back to the homestead, we want to just toss the computer, the phone, the few lights and all. Now, if we could just figure out how to make a living with absolutely none of that stuff! It was funny to read about your family and their perception of your life in AK. I had an aunt in Atlanta who called us shortly after Chuck and I married. It was about 20 below zero and I was outside grilling chicken when she called. Chuck answered the phone. After a little "small talk" and discussing the weather, she asked to speak to me. When I came in, the first thing she asked was, "Are you WELL ? ! ? ! " She decided that I was either sick and delerious, or had gone nuts, so I decided not to tell her about the outhouse, either ;D Eventually she got used to the idea of me living in the "frozen north" so far from home. She was a very spunky woman and grew to appreciate our lifestyle. Your family will come around. In the mean time, sounds like you're having fun ;D Make yourself at home here Jenny Alaska HOMESTEADING Journal

Computer / oil lamp
I can relate
Out house/ jetted tub ?
No interior walls/ top of the line washing machine
It was really funny in an odd way but thats just how it worked.
the out house was a self contain unit and it replaced the "bucket"
We have a sort grey water system (did finally add the toliet so it is not a grey water system now.
Sewer system to code to come this year the ground was frozen - they said - so it will be nice.
Plus to be honest it will all be done free so that is a blessing. Our son is native and his corp will have it done for him. We never knew that they did things like that. we just keep intouch and try to find his birth family so that he will have his culture. The Native corp has be very good at helping us learn how to raise this child. I did not know that the child would get more than medical care and education. The child has some major challenges -- he will grow up but he will always need some help. That another reason why I grabbed all the land I could get. If we plan well he should be able to support himself with the land even if it means that some devlopment might have to be do in the future. He should have land enough to live a good life.
