hello my name is mark cole. i am currently a carpenter in Afghanistan. It has a been a dream of mine to start from scratch and live in Alaska. Heres a little about me.... I am 21 from Upstate new York in the Adirondacks.. i was in the army for 19 months located at ft Bragg north Carolina and was discharged early due to being hit by a car thanksgiving of 2004. i then moved to Arizona and worked as a superintendent for a stone masonry company. Now i am in Afghanistan as a carpenter traveling around remote sites as carpenter support for the military. heres why i am writing. It has been a life long dream to live in Alaska and another to build my own house, have a ranch, live very far from civilization away from city politics and ordinance. I love the earth and mountains and will protect it at any cost necessary. I had herd about homesteading a few times be for and was giving a little more info a few weeks ago. At the base i am at we now have Internet so this is the first chance i have had to start my research and begin the process. any information anyone has as to whom to contact when and where and/or any particulars i would appreciate it very much. Howdy Mark. At the moment I'm in Wyoming, will be returning to AK asap. Welcome to the forumj, some good folk giving good info here. One of the grand things about Alaska is it is huge, and varied. Your dream will fit in someplace. Though land cost is a bit much, I figure if I were of the ranch frame of mind I'd get familiar with the Matanuska valley. Really good land and sun for growing stuff there. I hope we/I hear from ya often. JD
