I currently live in the Susitna Valley, in a little cabin with my dog, though I'll be moving to a more populated area (still in AK) soon. Hate to do it but I need to be where I can work all winter.
Nice place here...

Currently I live near Talkeetna. I've been in Alaska off and on for about 25 years--yikes, I hadn't realized it had been so long until I just now typed that. I have been thinking about going to work at Chena Hot Springs for the winter and then spending the summer on Prince of Wales where I have family.

There are some places for sale up Petersville Road---nice country up there too. Whereabouts are you at now?

I am quite a few miles south of there. I am looking for good soil vs the sandy stuff I have found out of willow. I like sand for the building of the underground house I am looking to do but I dont want it for the rest of the property. I want nice loamy soil for pastures, gardens, and all. That is the big hook is good soils. I definately dont want to be into permafrost either. I want to not have where I am going to end up float away either. There isnt a lake, creek or any running water on this property that I am aware of at this time.
Where I am now, I have great soil and great drainage and gravel below the surface by about 2 feet, which makes it a bugger to dig into to put in fence posts and all.

You might want to check with the Upper Susitna Soil and Conservation people for some advice on that...the soils up here seem pretty good though, but some areas of Petersville did get hit by the flood pretty bad, which you probably saw on the news or read about. I took a drive up Petersville Road today--got some photographs. Hey, if your'e interested in just a regular chat board for Alaskans (and a few from elsewhere--we even have people from the UK) feel free to join the board at the link in my sig. It isn't as informative as this board at all. It's only a couple weeks old but we seem to be having fun so far.
