Hi everybody.
I don't live in Alaska --- I live in Kentucky! This looks like a great board, though; and I'd like to say hello and also ask you all: what is it about Alaska that makes you want to live there?
I'm just curious!
TIA

I grew up there, so it's always been 'home' to me.

Alaska allows you to live. The quietness, the darkness, the brightness of the stars. So help me sometimes in the middle of the night when I need to go to the outhouse and the aurora is just over the trees and you can hear it I howl just because I can.

Because it is a real wilderness not a boxed in wilderness around cities with roads to and from. You can go to villages in the wilderness here but you may not come out if you dont have the skills and the knowledge to live here. Down there you just have to connect the dots with the roads here to there. Here the roads consist of the yukon river both summer and winter, the winter trails for the dog sledders and the snow machiners. Sometimes the only way in or out is by plane or a long arduous trip on a snowmachine. I have one of the gazette book of topo maps(i think that is what it is called any way) for the state and one in the lower 48, Alaska showes highways #1, #2, #3, the rest are dots that show the winter trails. The other one for the states shows roads and pavement everywhere. There is no where you can go with out concrete. Besides all that there is good moose, carabou, bear, etc hunting and great salmon fishing up here. You can live off what the land provides here. Down there, there is not enough space to actually let the land provide you your food, clothing, and way of life. The northern lights are beautiful, It is cold there by keeping only the hardy here and the ones that cant handle the cold out. (less population) FREEDOM

I love Alaska. Because of the open space. You can get away from people and society. You can use all of your constitional rights. And the scerny is second to none from anywhere in the world. And I have traveled the world. Now, I don't think I would ever live anywhere else in the world.

I love the replies! Had my wife come up and read them as well. She said "18 months!". We're planning on May of '08 to start heading up.
