Depends ;D
Got to give more info Linda. Will you have elec or not? Heating fuel or wood, running water or have to haul it? From where, how far? Will you have a car? will you not. How far is the nearest job if you got it? Many variables here. Make up a scenario then we can kinda give you an idea.

smwon: If you have no electricity, haul your own water looks like your major expenses will be transportation and food. Food can be supplemented by the methods you are familair with but there is a lot that can not. If you are locating on the road system a local price check on food supplies and fuel-both heating and transportation will allow you to approximate those costs. We are still the second highest average pump price in all 50 states and the price of fuel oil and propane is not going down. A biggee to consider. As you know things are higher the further away from the population centers you get. This is offset to some degree by the PFD check(after the 2nd full year) and lack of taxes but still doesn't make any form of bush existence a bargain. When we made our plunge I really thought existing out here by eating berries, bark and moose meat would be a financial dream come true. All the other expenses like transportaion and fuel to name a view offset whatever bargains there may be. If you locate on the road system which I consider a compromise you will negate a lot of our very high transportation costs for our once a year trip to the road system. At one time or another I've spent time in most of the major population centers down in America and a lot of rural areas and think the average cost of living down there wasn't that much different than Anchorage was when you consider the higher average wages. You can come up with individual areas both down there and up here that vary but overall whatever you exist on down there could be used as a comparison. All of the basics could be pre priced at wherever you are considering then it will come down to your individual needs which only you can answer.
