Have any of you made a well on your place? Would ya mind telling me what you know about wells in Alaska, or more specifically, the Copper River Basin area. If ya don't have a well, would you share how you get your water? Thanks JD

We recently had to have a well dug at the store we work at here in Chickaloon, and because a lot of the people here in the community wanted to have one also, the well diggers gave a price break. We are in the Matanuska Valley, and I know that the 8-10 wells that were dug this past year went from 45-120 feet all within a couple square miles, so that gives you an idea on that. I personally don't have a well on my cabin property, so for the 1 1/2 years that we lived there we hauled water from the General Store that we now work at. Used those blue 5 gallon containers, which is what a LOT of people here in Chickaloon do that don't have wells. They come here and fill 'er up Wolfie

Since all my well drilling experiences can be summed up in two words "dry hole" I'll tell you we pump all our water from the river and store it in a 600 gallon bladder tank under the floor. Gets interesting when the river freezes all the way to the bottom in front of the house.

We spent 15 years hauling water either from local businesses, springs or from the river. Yes, it becomes much harder to haul when the river freezes all the way down. Then you have to become "ice miners". After many dry hole experiences and much labor, we finally bit the bullet and had the well drilled. It went 180 feet here and down the road ten miles water is at 10 or 20 feet. Just goes to show that you really can't tell unless you have someone within the radius of a mile or two with a well to gather info from. We have a electric pump now but have talked about DC. Does any one have any experience with DC pumps for deep wells?

In Tok, north of the Copper River Basin, water is of very good quality. Wells range in depth from forty feet or so near the Tanana River to over a hundred feet deep as you get farther from the river. (There is an underground river flowing through the area.) Water is also of good quality in the Delta Junction area. Up around Chicken, I've heard that it's hard to find good ground water as some of it has heavy metals (arsenic, for one) -- this is the Forty-Mile area. I have heard that the Copper River Basin also has some water quality issues. If you are considering that area, you should do some checking before you buy any land there.
