Anyone eat salmon eggs, or have some other use? I've caught lots of egg filled salmon in my day, and never knew of a use for the eggs . JD

I am not certain, but I THINK those were salmon eggs on that piece of sushi I had. They were wonderfull. They tasted like the ocean tastes when you lick your lips, and at the time I hadn't seen the ocean in years. It was a walk down memory lane. Suchi rice is mixed with a little vinegar, salt and sugar before it is rolled into those shapes. I am certain you can find the recipe on the net. It was rice, surrounded by seaweed, with a dollop of eggs on top. I SUPPOSE the eggs were separated and washed and? On a more CONVENTIONAL note, when I was a kid they made wonderfull bait for pan fish.

JD: There is a German guy that runs a fishing lodge about ten miles from us that makes caviar from sockeye eggs. At one time I knew the ingrediants he added. To me it is kind of tasteless but to each his own.

We've used them for fishing, too. I've heard they're good to eat, but haven't tried it yet. Also, I thought Chuck was going to post this, but guess he forgot. He rots 'em down and uses them for trapping. Not exactly sure what he does, though.

Be careful about selling anything.........even parts like salmon eggs from anything taken from a sport fishery on a sporting or subsistance license! F&G will string ya up for that in a heartbeat.......you're better off getting caught fishing without a license than selling anything you caught!

Went king fishing the past 2 days. NO, I didnt catch any thing but the folks on either side of me did all day long. Day 2 I was at the cleaning table area. Every one was bagging their egg sacks. I asked them what they do with them and one guy gave me a long story of what to do and another a short version. The short was what I remembered. The short version was to soak them in borax for a day or a day and a half then take them out and freeze them. Every one there I talk to uses them to fish for silvers. I dont know how well you need to clean them off after the borax treatment but if any one has any ideas or knowledge please share I would like to know.
While I was sitting there also talked to a native kid about the native uses. He said that they taste real good cooked. He said that they take the heads and make fish head stew. The drop the eggs in that and cook them. I asked him how do you know they are done and he said they change colors.

I've had salmon eggs a long time ago -- I think they were just fried. As I recall, they were kind of sticky, and I didn't care much for the taste, so didn't eat them again, but they are edible, and I'd eat them if food was in short supply. They could also be fed to chickens or dogs.
They do change color when cooked, the same as chicken eggs do (from bright yellow to pale yellow for chicken eggs).

Oh I think it is cool that the eggs can be eaten... I always wondered why we didn't eat them.

One of the guys at work said that you know they are done when you can squeeze them between your fingers and no liquid comes out.
For all of you that use the eggs as bait. do any of you use the borax treatment??? if not what do you do with them and how do you store them?? I would love to know.
