We have worked with James before. The amount of $ was not really a big sum when you consider the cost involved in just getting to Alaska from the lower 48. Also, If you are going it in the bush then you will have little chance at a job or other income. Lastly, can you give a link to the land auction there? I have spoke with a woman there that lived in the bush with her DH and then came out for a time in order to adopt. i so admired them. Anyway, I know they took advantage of the land auction.

I think the money Ricochet is offering varies a little from family to family. It is enough to certainly be a help, but not enough if you can't afford a move in the first place. For a family who almost has enough, or wants a little cushion before making the big move, the amount they're offering would sure be great, though.
Firethorn, I think Chuck and I are the family you're talking about. We have a very remote homestead in the bush. We left to move out to a village because the adoption judge in the country from which we were trying to adopt our first son thought we were living too primitive out here. While there, we adopted two other sons as newborns, then moved back out here to our homestead last summer.
If you go to the Alaska DNR website, you'll find information on "land disposal". There are different kinds. Some is over-the-counter land sales. Some is "recreational property". Not sure exactly how that works. I think you lease the land at a very good price for a time, then can buy it. Lots of details to check out thoroughly before you do it. It wouldn't be for everyone, but we've known folks who have been wonderfully satisfied doing this. Don't have time now to look it up, but if you can't find the site or the info (it's a little hard to navigate) then let me know. I wouldn't rely on what the folks at DNR tell you. They could direct you to their site, or the specific place to look, but may give you wrong information. Get anything they tell you in writing, and see the land before you buy.

Great site Brent. Thanks for posting that. We'll have a lot of fun looking it over.
