We only go out once a year to Anchorage to visit our children and do the doctor, dentist and supply thing and try to time it as close to ice out as possible. We are 30 miles upstream from Ugashik Village so that is the closest place we can fly out of. When things looked favorable a couple weeks ago we made our reservations but have had a unusually late run of cold weather and snow. Most of the ice went out of the river about a week ago but as you can see the wind had it all packed right in front of the village where we needed to go. Two days ago we were all packed and ready to go when I took one look downstream from out upstairs window and the ice was coming upstream. Evidently the large tide broke up some feeder streams and picked up all the ice on the shore and the whole river was packed with it. Had my friend that took the photo fly it again and he said the entire river was jammed so here we set. Waiting for the winds to go down now but none of the ice is out of the lake just above us so hope we can make it downstream before that ice jams the river. The other problem is it takes the high tide about 6-7 hours to get up here so the high water that floats the iceburgs is always present somewhere on the river. The good news is it keeps us off the street in town where it is really dangerous.

We returned a few days ago having survived three weeks in the big city. The most dangerous part of the trip was driving in Anchorage. The bear season ended last week but as you can see from the photos I took off our front deck last night they never got them all. Also had one help out my bride by partially rototilling the garden.

Kristiana: It is indeed good to be home. Never realized how quiet it was out here untill we spent 3 weeks in Anchorage.

Town trips kinda help you appreciate the finer things in life don't they?
