Just wondering when is the best time to start planting seeds indoors? We usually start about now throwing ashes on the garden area to melt the snow, even though we usually get quit a bit more during March. Then we wait for the garden to dry enough, till and make our rows. It's usually very late May when we can plant seeds and set out our new little seedlings from the seeds we start in the house.
So, most years I get out my little plastic seed starting pots and get my seeds going about the middle of April. But this year I was thinking of starting a little early. Just seems like it may be an early summer. But, if I'm wrong, they'll end up in the house too long, and get leggier than usual. We don't have the ideal spot in our house for starting seeds, but we do the best we can and I move them around once or twice a day to keep the light on them as best I can.
Eventually we want to build some permanent raised beds. Also, when we get our new house built, it will have a south facing greenhouse on the front.
I think the main things I'll do from seed this year (like most years) will be cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. Also a few herbs. Will just put the kale, collards and turnips directly in the garden. Won't do much experimenting this year with trying to grow new things. Lots going on right now and the boys are still so little that I just don't think I want to spend time on new varieties or veggies that may or may not work for us. Next year, though I want to get a patch of asparagus started, along with more herbs.
So what are you planting and when will you start your seeds?
