Since I haven't seen it mentioned here I thought I'd mention that the book I use the most for gardening questions is the Sunset Western Garden Book. While in the past they didn't include as much for Alaska gardeners, with this latest updated one I have (2001) they have included Alaska and covered it much more thoroughly.
It is seldom I cannot find a plant described and covered in this book, although they are not as thorough with herbs as I'd like, but they provide invaluable information about plant requirements and growing information much more accurate and thorough, on a much wider range of plants than any other book I've seen.
It is not inexpensive, but if you get it at Costco, or another warehouse or discount store it's not too bad. Regular retail is $32.95. It's a huge book and is well worth the money, it covers so much.
I've always lived in the western states, and I've been using this book since the 1970's, and it just gets better and better. This is my third edition of it.
It's a big help when you want to try something new and don't know if it will work, or if something grows in your area, or any special requirements of a plant, and they're careful to tell you if something is invasive, or could cause other problems in the garden, etc.
Hope this helps,

Another great book for gardening in Alaska is The Alaska Gardening Guide by Ann D. Roberts The information is top notch and goes through diffent areas of Alaska. While we aren't professing above average success in growing things we have tried alot of things and would be willing to let anyone know what we find works in our little part of the world.
