Hi guys, What should I look for in a chainsaw? Brands, size, cc.? Currently I have a Homelite 16" saw that works great for s. iowa tree trimming but I know the 2 enviroments are as different as night and day. I wouldn't want to trust my saw for heavy day in day out work. I was wanting to fell trees and limbing but also was planning on doing some light portable mill work. thanks brent

Sthil is popular up here.
Depends on what you are also wanting to do. Ak mill and chain saw to cut your wood or are you wanting to invest in a real wood mill? A 2 person hand saw with sharpening implements is never a bad thing to have either. ;D

No I'm not going into the wood milling business, just want to be able to rip logs for my own personal use. I have looked at the Ak mill in the catalogs and something on that line is what I was wanting. I just don't know how big of a chain saw I should get. If stihl is popular up there then that is probably what I will go with so I can get parts easily. p.s. don't tell anyone this but I did buy a 2 person hand saw on ebay for $10.00 last month. I love it, I just wouldn't want to cut a winters supply with it unless I had to. It is in great shape I just need to get a tooth setting tool for it so I can keep it sharp. brent

I use Stihls an 029 for general use and an 056 for my mills and Lewis wench. I think if you buy any upper end consumer model from Stihl, Husky, or Jonserd you will be ok. It will cost a little more but if you can afford it buy it from a dealership and not a box store. The dealers are more knowledgeable than some kid who doesn't really care if you get what you want or need. Many dealers also carry rebuilds for about half the price I don't want to put any saws down but I wouldn't buy a store brand, homelite, or Pulan they just aren't made to stand a lot of hard use. Be careful about getting a pro model the parts are very pricey I just bought mufflers for both my saws the 029 was $35.00 the 056 was $140.00. I replaced the cylinder on the 056 a few years ago the parts were some where around $150.00. Store brands are throw aways and usually aren,t worth fixing anyway.
