We have 3 sets of grandkids (7 GK's total), all out of state. One grandson lives in Bethel and we would like to send him a used computer. We have used computers, for the grandkid's in Oregon. Then we would like to set up everyone with cheap internet so that we can stay in touch. We're in CA and have a little independent phone company and I think that Bethel in an independent, also. We want to pay for the internet for everyone, anyone have suggestions on the Alaska Side of this? Also, how do I go about shipping a computer to Alaska, what kind of packaging? Will the cold temps in a small plane effect a computer? Am I going to have to wrap it in a comforter or down quilt? ha...I do have these, just in case...

laceyJ: In a previous life I repaired computers for IBM in some very cold places including Alaska and mailing them without any special insulation is commonplace. The biggest concern is that they should be brought up to room temperature slowly at there destination. I have had several PC's shipped to our very rural location then taken the last 30 miles by snowmobile, atv or boat without a problem. About the internet connection I am not sure about the Bethel area but most of rural Alaska uses some form of direct link to sattelite like Starband. Not a lot of options.

Hi, Thanks for responding. I don't know anything about starband either. We're on our local internet because of the independent phone company. I guess I'll have to check out Bethel's phone directory... thanks again, lacyj
