Hi... I am new here. I have been reading your boards for awhile now and I really enjoy the topics. They are not only interesting but also educating. My family and I live in rural Montana. We moved here 2 1/2 years ago. Because of our location, we have had to learn to become much more self sufficient. (No walmart up the street!!!!) My goal, as most on this board is to get to Alaska. I'm not in a hurry...........yet! I hope with this board to get more familiar with your lifestyles and how you adjusted.
Look forward to chatting.
I am curious.... Chuck - how long have you been in the bush? ugasikrobert - how long have you been in the bush?

Hey welcome to Alaska Homesteading. I've lived in the bush since 1986, with the exception of a short time we lived in a fishing town in Bristol Bay.
I was stationed in Great Falls for 8 months in 1973. If I hadn't landed in Alaska Montana would have been my second choice. I've been through the Three Forks area but haven't spent much time there. It is some very beautiful country though.

Chuck, Your right, it is beautiful country down here. Im not to far from Three Forks. Usually go thru Three Forks every couple months to go to "Boz-Angeles" (Bozeman MT) and stock up. We don't get out of our valley much. We spend most of our time in the mountains hunting, fishing, camping. I have met alot of people that spend time in Alaska and they all say they love it. Most say if Montana gets any more people their heading north!

Montana is a great place to be. I have a question, I know the importance of being debt free as we moved to Montana to buy a business and needed to be financially stable on our own for a time to allow our business to get going. Once you are established and the initial cost of your homestead is met, how do most of you generate income? (Assuming most aren't retired or independently wealthy) I know that very little($)is required to live on when your able to use what God provided. I also realize that there are expenses that need to be met. Just curious!
