I am interested in harvesting rainwater. I admittedly don't know alot about it as it is the subject of my most resent research. I found a web site that tells you how to guesstimate how much rain water you can collect from the size of your roof. I calculated, roughly, that I could harvest aproximatley 33 gallons per inch of rain with a roof approximately 480 square feet. Problem is that looking at the average rainfall in places like Sutton, Wasilla, and those areas I would have to really limit my water usage. The only place I have found where it may be feasible to have a self sustained water supply with rain fall would be in Southeast Alaska. Does anyone have any more information they could share? Thanks in advance for your reply!

My husbands Uncle used a cistern under his house. The level of water would go up during the wet time of year, and it would go down in the dry time of year. He had a lever in the gutter so that he could let the first water of a storm go by to rinse the roof of, then he would flip the lever and divert the rest into the cistern.

What kind of roof do you have? Metal roofs are fine, but any kind of asphalt shingle makes for nasty water.........
