Bought a Makita Curved Base Plainer for the Log and Timber framing project, never used anything quite like it. The planer is quite large but the base is curved and is used to make scarfs in the logs, among many other things. Since I won't get a lot of use with this tool unil we start building and haven't done extensive plaining, my question is how long will the blades last and how many times can I sharpen them before replacing them?

I have never used one before; we do have a Log Wizard and they use regular planner blades. I use it a lot for peeling logs which is pretty hard on cutting edges it's never been sharpened. You will probably want it pretty sharp for finish or detailed work. I'm not sure but by looking at dreadstalkers posts I think he might be into power tools, you might try PMing him and ask.

Those log wizards ROCK! ;D I peeled house logs and a TON a fence posts and pole frame timbers with mine. I also have a regular Makita power planer and that's something I use all the time too..............it sure makes fast work when it comes to triming up doors and windows and planing wood down for a tight fit. The blades on both (same 3 1/2" straight planer blades) seem to stay sharp for quite some time unless you hit a nail or screw head by mistake, which I've done once ro twice. they're easy to sharpen, but you want to make sure they're put back in at the proper depth...I forget what the spec is..........3/32" of an inch maybe....but I just set them with a drill bit as a gauge and have never had a problem. One note............although they SEEM to work fine forever....a fresh set of sharp blades makes them work WAY better!
