Bob, did you take the Northern Lights pic? Hubby experimented with some last winter and they came out pretty good. What kind of camera did you use, speed, fstop etc etc Wolfie

Wolfwomen: As I recall there was almost rocket science involved trying to get the northern lites photos. The camera was a Sony F717. If I recall correctly it was done with tripod and at a very slow lens speed. A bit much for a point and click dude like me.

I have a 20 year old Minolta that we used to take the NL pics with. VERY slow speed, have to make sure the shutter stays open for 10-30 seconds minimum. I was just wondering if you had any more pointers I could use...LOL!!!
Wash, if you have a 35mm you can take them. Just need to make sure you have a tripod and a way to make the shutter stay open.

As I recall it was a real crap shoot trying to set shutter speed long enough to capture the surge in the lights. The beauty of digital is thefilm is cheap and you keep shooting till you get it right. I also used a remote trigger on the tripod and the lights happened to be bright enough you could almost read the camera settings without a headlamp.

OK Bob, now you've confused me. Are you using a digital or a 35mm?? A digital doesn't use film!! Wash, you can get pics with a digital if you can keep the shutter open. The new digital SLR cameras will be wonderful for lights pics, but they cost around $800. Gonna get me one eventually Wolfie

The Sony F717 is about a three year old digital camera. It is not a SLR digital camera. If your digital camera has manual overides that allows you to set a very slow shutter speed you should be good to go assuming you can keep it steady for that long.
