Hello All,
I have heard about people using an electronic fence to help protect against bears. Is this just a version of the cattle fence? Solar powered and set up in a perimeter to give a jolt to deter a visit? One strand, two strand, three strand? Highest voltage available? Anyone with experience?
Thanks,
Sean

I've tried all the fireworks, explosives, and firearms and the only nonfatal thing I've found that works is a good stout electric fence. I tried several of the small electric fence models but this is the one that works for me: www.jefferslivestock.com/ssc/product.asp?CID=2&mscssid=7CEGA9JXQMR79L3TNNSS1BLSUNC69HB9&pf_id=17207&cmkw=Mag-12-UOI used the yellow plastic insulators on regular metal fence posts with a single strand of the wire from the catalog. Although they are advertised as waterproof I mounted it inside. I used a single 10' 5/8" copper ground rod driven under the moisture laden eve of the building. A good ground is key. Also try to mount the single strand so you can hit the damp nose of the growler. The last it worked I was sleeping inside the house about 100' feet away and the commotion was enough to wake me up. The only non-fatal method I know that has no repeat offenders.

Thanks. I appreciate you helping to school a newbie.
That sounds like a good explanation.

They actually work real well on moose too.............no electric fence, no garden.....or at least no harvest. A good ground IS essential.
